previous app with detailed history through Nova #17Personality:Sam's overwhelming personality trait is that he's immature. Not in a "sticking your tongue out, making stupid jokes" way (though he does make stupid jokes, and on one occasion sticks his tongue out), but in an impulsive, overconfident, easily distracted way. He gets bullied at school for being the janitor's son, and instead of running away from his bully, he fights back and gets in trouble. He's not a very good student, becoming even less so once he becomes Nova and starts missing school to fight bad guys in space.
That said, when it comes to his family, Sam takes on an immense amount of responsibility. When his dad is too drunk to do his job, Sam covers for him. When his mom has to work extra long shifts at the diner, Sam babysits Kaelynn. When there's an eviction notice pinned to their door, Sam takes it upon himself to bring home a giant solid gold boulder from space to try and solve their money problems. (Okay, so not all of his ideas are good ones. The boulder ended up being radioactive.)
Sam is desperate to do a good job as Nova and longs for companionship. He doesn't have any friends, except maybe Carrie, who he thinks is the cutest girl in school and has a massive crush on. He latches onto Uatu, the Watcher who lives on the moon, and confides all his problems in him, even though Uatu doesn't speak and therefore can't respond. Sam always comes out of these one-sided conversations feeling a little better.
Sam's relationship with and feelings toward his father vary widely over the course of the series. In the beginning, Sam thinks his dad is nothing but a pathetic drunk janitor who tells his kids ridiculous, made up stories. When he learns that those stories might be true, he resolves himself to find his missing dad, and live up to the legacy he left behind. At one point, he learns that his dad may not have been the paragon of truth and virtue that he'd thought, but he never loses faith, and those stories turn out not to be the whole truth.
Sam's mother, on the other hand, is his moral compass. She helps him realize that he has to take responsibility for his actions by helping clean up the skate park he destroyed as Nova before flying off on more adventures. Sam would do anything to protect his mom, as evidenced by the gold boulder incident, and when he fought off one of Thanos' assassins after she called his mom a cow. Though they may argue from time to time about his role as Nova versus his responsibilities as Sam, Sam almost always ends up listening to his mom and doing what she says.
Sam is arrogant, stubborn, and not very bright. He's a typical teenager, with a lot to learn and a lot of room to grow. At the beginning of his story, he's motivated by the desire to do better, be better than his father, to escape the boring life of Carefree, Arizona. Later, he stops trying to do better and instead focuses on trying to do good. He doesn't get Spider-Man's "With great power comes great responsibility" speech, but knows all the same that he has a duty as Nova to help people, be they an old lady trapped in a burning building or a bunch of aliens stranded in space.
As Sam, his main motivation is to find balance between the two sides of his life, and to do all the awesome Nova things he can do now without having to sacrifice his normal life. While he doesn't exactly love the way things are in Carefree, he recognizes that it's still important to have that life. He can't be Nova one hundred percent of the time, nor would he want to, if that meant abandoning his mom and sister.
Sam's relationship with his father has been soured by years of not believing his stories and covering for him when he's too drunk to do his job (Sam has been not-so-secretly cleaning the school bathrooms for his dad since 7th grade). But Sam longs to have a better relationship with his dad, as evidenced by the hope he feels once he learns the truth about Jesse's Nova stories, and the jealousy he feels over Kaelynn's blind faith in Jesse. He resolves to find Jesse and bring him home, a feat which takes him a long time, but which he does eventually accomplish.
Perhaps because Jesse was so unreliable, Eva's role in Sam's life is so much stronger. She is the main caretaker of the family, and has instilled in Sam a sense of morals and responsibility. Eva is the glue that holds the Alexander family together. Sam holds a tremendous amount of respect for his mother, even if he can't always understand why she thinks so highly of a loser like Jesse (not knowing the truth yet). Even so, Sam is still a teenager, so he will sometimes twist Eva's words to do what he wants, regardless of her advice.
The fourth member of the Alexander household is Sam's little sister, Kaelynn. Sam cares deeply for Kaelynn, and wants to keep her as blissfully ignorant of the world's dangers as he can. When Kaelynn puts on the Nova helmet and accidentally blows a hole in the living room wall, Sam reassures her that Eva won't be mad at her, and that he'll fix everything. After Jesse disappears and Eva has to work to support the family, Sam steps up and takes care of Kaelynn whenever he can, making sure Carrie can cover for him when he has to go do Nova stuff.
Sam is thought of poorly by his teachers, because of his poor performance in school, and by his peers because of his low social status as the janitor's son. Sam's tendency to get in fights at school is partially due to the bullying he gets from Moffet, and partially due to his inability to back down from a fight, especially once he gains his Nova powers. He is a determined and strong-willed individual, who hates to be proven wrong. That said, once he is shown to be in the wrong, he will do everything he can to make up for his mistakes.
Outside of school and family, most of Sam's interactions are with other superheroes, and for the most part, they go well. His inexperience and eagerness to help can sour some of his interactions, such as the time he got in Spider-Man's way, or when he stopped what he thought was a police chase but actually turned out to be a film set. That said, heroes like Thor and Beta Ray Bill respect Sam for his bravery and conviction.
The other person who Sam interacted with was Uatu, the Watcher, and he had to be doing something right, because Uatu actually interacted back, whereas normally he said and did nothing, merely standing to observe all of reality. Perhaps this was due to Uatu's own relationship with his father, or maybe Sam is just like an insistent little puppy that Uatu couldn't help but like, but either way, Uatu not only accepted gifts from Sam, but invited Sam into his home, more than he had done for anyone else. When Uatu was killed, Sam took the loss hard, and when he came face to face with the one responsible, his fear and grief made him hesitate. Instead of attacking like the rest of the heroes did, all Sam could do was ask, "Why?"
When it comes to forming new relationships, Sam tries to look cool and suave (which doesn't always work), and tries very hard to keep his two identities separate. As Nova, he will want to help people get back home, but as Sam, he will mainly just want to make friends. He'll probably seek out a mentor-type figure, and, being a hormonal teenager, develop a crush or two on girls his own age. Though, Sam's crushes never seem to work out well for him. Jinin is angry he didn't get a higher bounty for turning in Skaarn, and Carrie is pissed that Sam doesn't trust her enough to admit to her his secret identity (even though she stormed off just as he was about to). Hopefully he'll have better luck aboard the Moira.
Upon finding himself aboard the Moira, Sam won't be too astounded, seeing as he's (1) been in space, and (2) been kidnapped before. It's the limitations on his powers that will surprise and frustrate him, and once he realizes he can't return home, he'll begin panicking. He'll get used to things eventually, but he'll constantly worry about being away from his parents and sister.
Contracts: Sam's first idea will be to leave the ship and use his Nova powers to go home, but due to not wanting to break the game mechanics, his Nova abilities will be limited, rendering him unable to space jump or plot a course home. Thus, he'll be forced into accepting the contract and going about this the long way.
Abilities/Skills:Sam's powers come from the Nova Force via his helmet. They're "gravimetric" abilities, meaning they're gravity-based. Aside from the helmet's powers, Sam's abilities include speaking some Spanish, and knowing a little bit of Morse code. Plus rad skateboarding skills.
With the helmet on, Sam can:
- Fly
- Breathe in space
- Lift great weights (up to 20 tons)
- Fire concussive bolts of Nova Force energy
- Travel at great speeds. Speeds so fast, he can "jump" across vast reaches of space, i.e. to the other end of the universe*
- Use some telekinesis (though let's forget that because no other Nova has been shown to do it)
- Diagnose the source of an illness
- Power a spaceship
The helmet itself can:
- Translate any language
- Navigate courses through space*
- Warn Sam of danger
- Locate other Novas
- Receive distress signals
- Play recorded messages
*These two abilities will be limited/nullified to as not to break the game. Given that the in-game universe is not the same as his home universe, it would make sense that he would be unable to navigate through it. Whether he's actually unable to travel fast enough to space jump, or would just avoid doing so because jumping blindly into uncharted space is a stupid idea, I will leave to mod discretion.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Strengths- Dedicated to doing what's right
- Wants to help people
- Willing to learn from his mistakes
- Hard worker
- Talented skateboarder
- Unafraid of manual labor
Weaknesses- Without his helmet, is just an ordinary human teenager
- Often forgets this fact
- Not a very good fighter
- Makes rash decisions without analyzing all the information
- Easily distracted
- Kind of clueless
- Not very smart
- Memory issues caused by several concussions

It looks like he was messing around with the MID and accidentally started recording. He makes a stupid face or two for the camera, but once he realizes it's actually going out to people he sits up and looks sheepish.]Uh, hi. So... I wanted to say thanks for the smart watch, I guess. Always wanted one of these. Too bad it comes with a price of "holy crap I'm stuck in space."
[He looks off to the side, worried. Then back to the camera.]Look, I get that nobody knows why the Ingresses brought us here, or how to fix them and get home or anything like that. But it
sucks, okay? And I can't be the only one who feels like saying that. I mean, I have stuff I need to do back home.
[Under his breath, he adds,] And I'm totally gonna get expelled if I miss any more school.
We don't... have to go to school here, right? There isn't some space high school they're gonna drag us to, is there? 'Cause the only thing worse than chess club is
space chess club, am I right?
[No one is laughing at your joke, Sam.]Right. Well, uh. Later!
